Queryable.Min<TSource> Method (IQueryable<TSource>)

Microsoft Silverlight will reach end of support after October 2021. Learn more.

Returns the minimum value of a generic IQueryable<T>.

Namespace:  System.Linq
Assembly:  System.Core (in System.Core.dll)

<ExtensionAttribute> _
Public Shared Function Min(Of TSource) ( _
    source As IQueryable(Of TSource) _
) As TSource
public static TSource Min<TSource>(
    this IQueryable<TSource> source

Type Parameters

  • TSource
    The type of the elements of source.

Return Value

Type: TSource
The minimum value in the sequence.

Usage Note

In Visual Basic and C#, you can call this method as an instance method on any object of type IQueryable<TSource>. When you use instance method syntax to call this method, omit the first parameter.

Exception Condition

source is nulla null reference (Nothing in Visual Basic).

The Min<TSource>(IQueryable<TSource>) method generates a MethodCallExpression that represents calling Min<TSource>(IQueryable<TSource>) itself as a constructed generic method. It then passes the MethodCallExpression to the Execute<TResult>(Expression) method of the IQueryProvider represented by the Provider property of the source parameter.

The query behavior that occurs as a result of executing an expression tree that represents calling Min<TSource>(IQueryable<TSource>) depends on the implementation of the type of the source parameter. The expected behavior is that it returns the minimum value in source.

The following code example demonstrates how to use Min<TSource>(IQueryable<TSource>) to determine the minimum value in a sequence.

      Dim doubles() As Double = {1.5E+104, 9.0E+103, -2.0E+103}

      Dim min As Double = doubles.AsQueryable().Min()

      outputBlock.Text &= String.Format("The smallest number is {0}.", min) & vbCrLf

      'This code produces the following output:

      'The smallest number is -2E+103.

         double[] doubles = { 1.5E+104, 9E+103, -2E+103 };

         double min = doubles.AsQueryable().Min();

         outputBlock.Text += String.Format("The smallest number is {0}.", min) + "\n";

             This code produces the following output:

             The smallest number is -2E+103.
