Configuring Tracing for Failed Requests in IIS 7

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista

With tracing for failed requests, you can capture an XML formatted log of a problem when it occurs, so that you do not have to reproduce the problem before you start troubleshooting. Additionally, you can define failure conditions for applications and configure which trace events to log on a per-URL basis.

Tracing for failed requests is configured at two levels:

  • At the site level, you enable or disable tracing and configure log file settings.

  • At the application level, you specify the failure conditions for capturing the trace events and also configure which trace events should be captured in the log file entries.
