You can upgrade from one major version of Business Central to the next. However, minor updates are regularly made available for each major release, like 23.11 or 24.5. Whether you're upgrading from one on-premises version to another, or you're migrating to Business Central online, it's important to target an update versions that are compatible with your current version.

Some versions are marked with 1, which means that the compatible upgrade versions for that version aren't available yet. If you are currently operating on this version, you'll have to wait until the next round of updates before you upgrade.

Version 21 compatibility
The following table lists the Business Central 21 update versions and the minimum update versions of later releases that are compatible for upgrade.

Although the table lists the minimum compatible update versions, we recommend upgrading to the latest update version for the release you are upgrading to.
If you're coming from version 13 or earlier, Business Central Spring 2019 (v14) is a required step to upgrade to the latest version of Business Central. However, mainstream support for version 14 ends in October 2023, and minor updates to the version are no longer available. New customers can't use version 14 in production, but only as a path for upgrading to latest version. Existing customers on version 14 remain supported by Microsoft as defined in the Fixed Lifecycle Policy.
All version 14 updates are compatible with any update version of Business Central 2024 release wave 1 and later release waves.
The following table lists the Business Central 14 versions and the minimum version of later releases that are compatible for upgrade. For example, you can upgrade version 14.0 to any 15 or 16 version. You can only upgrade version 14.11 to version 15.5 (or later).
