Компонент BackgroundWorker заменяет пространство имен System.Threading и расширяет его функциональные возможности; однако при необходимости пространство имен System.Threading можно сохранить для обратной совместимости и использования в будущем. Windows Forms использует модель однопотокового подразделения (STA), так как в основе Windows Forms лежат собственные окна Win32, которые по своей сути являются потоковыми подразделениями. Модель STA подразумевает, что окно можно создать в любом потоке, но она не может переключать потоки после создания, и все вызовы функций должны выполняться в потоке создания. Вне Windows Forms классы в .NET Framework используют свободную потоковую модель. Сведения о потоках в .NET Framework см. в статье Потоки.

Модель STA требует, чтобы все методы в элементе управления, которые должны вызываться из-за пределов потока создания элемента управления, должны маршалироваться в (выполняться) в поток создания элемента управления. Для этой цели базовый класс Control предоставляет несколько методов (Invoke, BeginInvoke и EndInvoke). Invoke выполняет синхронные вызовы методов; BeginInvoke выполняет асинхронные вызовы методов.

Если вы используете многопоточность в элементе управления для ресурсоемких задач, пользовательский интерфейс может оставаться адаптивным, пока ресурсоемкие вычисления выполняются в фоновом потоке.

В следующем примере (DirectorySearcher) показан многопоточный элемент управления Windows Forms, использующий фоновый поток для рекурсивного поиска в каталоге файлов, соответствующих указанной строке поиска, а затем заполняет поле списка результатом поиска. Ниже приведены основные понятия, проиллюстрированные примером.

  • DirectorySearcher запускает новый поток для выполнения поиска. Поток выполняет метод ThreadProcedure, который, в свою очередь, вызывает вспомогательный метод RecurseDirectory для проведения фактического поиска и заполнения списка. Однако для заполнения списка требуется межпоточный вызов, как описано в следующих двух маркированных элементах.

  • DirectorySearcher определяет метод AddFiles для добавления файлов в список. Однако RecurseDirectory не может напрямую вызывать AddFiles, так как AddFiles может выполняться только в потоке STA, созданном DirectorySearcher.

  • Единственным способом, которым RecurseDirectory может вызывать AddFiles, является межпоточный вызов, то есть вызов Invoke или BeginInvoke для маршалирования AddFiles в поток создания DirectorySearcher. RecurseDirectory использует BeginInvoke для асинхронного вызова.
