特洛伊木馬程式通常會執行下列兩種動作的其中之一：啟動時破壞或修改資料 (例如清除硬碟)，或嘗試搜尋及竊取密碼、信用卡號碼和其他的機密資訊。

特洛伊木馬程式比其他類型的病毒構成更大的問題，因為它們的設計具有毀滅性或破壞性，不像病毒和蠕蟲的設計原意為無意傷害。 基本上，此區別在現實世界並不重要。 病毒、特洛伊程式和蠕蟲可以通稱為「電腦上或網路上的垃圾軟體」。
