Komponenta BackgroundWorker nahrazuje a přidává funkce do System.Threading oboru názvů. Pokud ale zvolíte, System.Threading zachová se obor názvů pro zpětnou kompatibilitu i budoucí použití. Další informace naleznete v tématu BackgroundWorker Component Overview.

model Windows Forms používá model sta (single-threaded apartment), protože model Windows Forms je založená na nativních oknech Win32, které jsou ze své podstaty s vlákny. Model STA znamená, že okno lze vytvořit v libovolném vlákně, ale nemůže po vytvoření přepnout vlákna a všechna volání funkce musí nastat ve vlákně vytvoření. Model STA vyžaduje, aby všechny metody na ovládacím prvku, který musí být volán z vnějšího vlákna pro vytvoření ovládacího prvku, musí být zařazovány do (spuštěno na) vlákně pro vytvoření ovládacího prvku. Základní třída Control poskytuje několik metod (InvokeBeginInvoke, a EndInvoke) pro tento účel. Invoke provádí synchronní volání metod; BeginInvoke provádí asynchronní volání metod.

Pokud v ovládacím prvku používáte vícevláknové zpracování pro úlohy náročné na prostředky, uživatelské rozhraní může zůstat responzivní, zatímco výpočty náročné na prostředky se spouští na vlákně na pozadí.

Následující ukázka (DirectorySearcher) ukazuje vícevláknový model Windows Forms ovládací prvek, který používá vlákno na pozadí k rekurzivnímu vyhledávání v adresáři pro soubory odpovídající zadanému vyhledávacímu řetězci a pak naplní seznam výsledkem hledání.   • DirectorySearcher spustí nové vlákno k provedení hledání.
