Free disk-space requirements for Update Services

Update Services requires a minimum of 9 gigabytes (GB) of free disk space. When you install Update Services, you have two installation options, as described in the following tables:

Error messages about the installation location

To resolve the problem with the installation location, find the heading below that matches the error message or warning that you received, and then follow the directions in that section.

There is not enough free disk space on your system drive to install Update Services

To install Update Services, you must have a minimum of 1 GB of free disk space on your system drive.

If you want to install Update Services, cancel Setup, free up at least 1 GB of disk space on your system drive, and then rerun Setup.

If you do not want to install Update Services, but you want to install other components of the Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Technologies, click I acknowledge all warnings, and then continue Setup. Update Services will not be installed.

There is not enough free disk space to install Update Services

To install Update Services, you must have a minimum of 8 GB of free disk space either on your system drive or on any other fixed drive. This is in addition to the 1 GB of free disk space that you must have on your system drive.

If you want to install Update Services, cancel Setup, free up at least 8 GB of disk space on any fixed drive (in addition to the 1 GB of free disk space on your system drive), and then rerun Setup.

If you do not want to install Update Services, but you want to install other components of the Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Technologies, click I acknowledge all warnings, and then continue Setup. Update Services will not be installed.

You are installing Update Services on a removable hard drive

You are installing Windows SBS 2003 R2 Update Services on a removable hard drive, such as a Universal Serial Bus (USB) drive, a FireWire 1394 drive, or another type of hard drive that is not permanently installed on the computer. If the hard drive is removed, Update Services cannot function.

Although you can install Update Services on your removable hard drive, it is strongly recommended that you install Update Services on a hard drive that is permanently installed on the computer.
