Move items

Completed

A company might need to move items to different bins to reorganize a section of the warehouse.

The movement of items from one bin to another within the same warehouse represents a change in the physical placement of items. However, the movement does not affect the inventory quantity in that warehouse. For this reason, when the user posts a warehouse movement, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central only creates warehouse entries but no item ledger entries.

You can use the following functions in Business Central to move items:

  • Item reclassification journals

  • Internal movements

  • Movement worksheets

Use item reclassification journals and internal movements

The following video shows how you can move items by using these functions in Business Central.

Use movement worksheets

Just like internal movements, you can use movement worksheets to prepare inventory movements. Besides entering movement worksheet lines manually, you can also use the Calculate Bin Replenishment function.

With the Calculate Bin Replenishment function, you can replenish bins by moving items from one bin to another. For example, you can replenish the picking zone by moving items from bulk bins to picking bins.

The Calculate Bin Replenishment function uses the following criteria:

  • Only items with fixed bins are replenished.

  • Replenishment is done from a bin with a lower ranking to a bin with a higher ranking. This means that the fixed bin of an item should have a higher ranking than the bin where the item is put away.

  • Replenishment is triggered when the quantity on the fixed bin is lower than the minimum quantity entered on the bin contents page.

  • The system suggests replenishing up to the maximum quantity entered on the bin contents page, if there’s sufficient inventory.

The following video demonstrates how to use the movement worksheet.
