When working with SharePoint Online, the ability to drag and drop files depends on the context and the version of SharePoint you are using. Let’s explore the options:
Modern Experience (Recommended):
In the modern experience, you can drag and drop files from your computer directly into your OneDrive library or a SharePoint team site.
Here’s how:
Open your OneDrive or SharePoint site library.
On your computer, select Start, then type File Explorer.
Navigate to the folder containing the documents you want to upload.
Drag the files to the space in the SharePoint library where it says “drag files here.”
The library should display “Drop here” when you hover the file over it.
Your files will appear in the Document library.
Note: Drag and drop works best with Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. If you don’t see the option to drag and drop files, you may need to update your copy of Office to the modern version.
Classic Experience (Alternative):
If you prefer the classic version, you can still browse and upload files using the classic interface.
To upload files and folders in a library, you must have contributor permissions to the library.
Internet Explorer doesn’t support uploading folders, so consider using Edge or Chrome for the best experience.
Workaround for Modern Libraries:
It’s by design that dragging and dropping files between SharePoint modern libraries is not available.
However, you can use the Copy to or Move to function to manage files between SharePoint modern libraries.
Another workaround is to create a shortcut of the SharePoint folder in your OneDrive, where you can then drag and drop files and folders.
Remember to check your permissions and choose the method that suits your needs best!
