Got a new toy: Sprint USB Wireless Modem

My buddies at Sprint sent me a new USB Wireless Modem to play with. This is the new Novatel Wireless Ovation U720, which plus via USB. I can play with Sprint's EVDO Rev A network which is super-fast. A few months ago I tried an EVDO PC-Card, also courtesy of Sprint, and I was quite impressed.

Forget about looking for a HotSpot or tilting your laptop at the airport to get a WiFi connection. It seems like most metro areas have EVDO Rev A coverage now, and most major cities have EVDO at least. When I tested the EVDO card I synchronized my mail using the 1xRTT network literaly in the middle of a desser in Arizona. It looks like the EVDO coverage in this area is pretty good.

My first concern was - will this work with Vista? I know many of the WWAN hardware providers did some non-standard tricks in their drivers and they were working on new versions for Vista. I was pleasantly surprised to find a Vista version on the drivers at www.sprint.com/downloads

I'll report back in a few weeks!
