Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 is DoD 5015.2 Certified
Well, the test date finally came and went and, over the past two weeks, JITC (the organization within the Department of Defense that administers the test) has been putting MOSS through its strenuous testing procedures. Late last week, it added MOSS 2007 to the list of certified products and on Tuesday we formally announced that Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 is certified against Chapter 2 of the DoD 5015.2 standard.
As a member of the product team who has been working on this certification, I can talk about what a great milestone this is! DoD 5015.2 is often considered a comprehensive “fitness test” for a records management system. Since the 5015 requirements were satisfied with either out of the box features or features that were built using known SharePoint extensibility points (e.g. SharePoint event handlers, workflows, content types), the project has been a great case study in the strength of the SharePoint platform. Plus, it’s nice to know that a whole class of customers (i.e. U.S. government agencies) can start using MOSS for records management.
The SharePoint product team worked together with Applied Information Sciences, Inc, a Microsoft Managed Gold Partner, to develop the extra features needed for certification. AIS was instrumental in helping us understand the DoD 5015.2 standard, and they were great at rapidly developing on top of MOSS 2007. We still have some work to do to get the pack that was used for certification out to everyone (Later this year, Microsoft will make the pack available for free to customers using MOSS 2007) and we have several whitepapers/code samples in production around some of the more compelling features.
