Security is... shredded cards...

Hi...

I am sitting in the cafeteria of building 16 on the MS campus in Redmond. So as you all problably guessed I am visiting some colleagues from Corp.

Since my colleague Lars who is travelling with me was first to buy todays Starbucks (hey, we are in Seattle) I was trying to get some money to be the next. So I found the ATM in the cafeteria, inserted my card, got some money, but no card back. The card was stuck and before I was able to do something the ATM transported it back inside and resettet itself. Thanks.

So I called the 800 something number and talked to the bank clerk. Well, hmm... please hold the line. Music for about 10 minutes. Then he told me, that he was really sorry, but for security reasons all cards that the ATM is not able to hand back are shredded right away. Sorry. He was a bit confused why I laughed...

OK, a million miles away from home and my just two weeks old EC-card shredded. Due to security reasons. Too much for me. So I will call my Volksbank in Dachau now to get a new one...

I feel like having an angel and a devil sitting on my shoulders. The security angel says "Hey, it is better this way. At least it is secure to handle the cards this way." The devil is telling me something different...
