Office 2007 Deployment Resources for End Users
I get asked a lot from customers about information to help them deploy Office 2007 to their organisation. Not about the technical bits to make it happen - but the interesting part is about how to get the organisation and the people ready for the new Ribbon User Interface and new Open XML file formats.
Here is a list of things I frequently send out, and if you are reading this you could very well have been sent this link in an email from me.
The Best Hidden Gems
Absolutely the best two major hidden gems you need to be aware of related to End User Experience with Office 2007 are “Search Commands” and the “Enterprise Learning Framework”.
1) Search Commands – this is a free add in that allows people to search using English terms to find the command they are looking for. It is an exceptionally useful tool, I highly, highly recommend it. It really helps users with the transition to the improved Office 2007 interface. You can download it here: http://www.officelabs.com/projects/searchcommands/Pages/default.aspx
2) Enterprise Learning Framework (ELF) - this is a structured way to approach the organisational changes and communication to your people about the Office 2007 roll out. After stepping through a wizard the ELF will give you the content you should send out to the users 1 month before deployment, 1 week before, the day before, the day of, and other time frames after the deployment. This is a great tool that does your thinking and email composition to your people for you!http://www.microsoft.com/technet/desktopdeployment/bdd/elf/welcome.aspx
Other material is included below to help you and end users with the transition.
Part 1 – Office Online Material – Product focused
Part 2 – Internal material we have made public which is scenario based
Here is a list of the Office Online training and reference materials for the Office Clients
Web-based interactive command reference guides (also available for download; follow the links in the articles to the downloadable versions)
Videos (basically 5-min versions of the training courses)
Full lists of 2003-2007 command equivalents (article and downloadable spreadsheet)
An easy way to get to all of these resources to use the downloadable “tab” add-ins that put links them and some other Office Online locations right into the ribbon in a few of the products. You can find those downloadable add-ins here:
In addition to our Office Online material above there is the Microsoft IT created Everyday Productivity Education (EPE) program to bridge the gap between technology and users. EPE provides employees with simple, scenario-based, best-use productivity aids on Microsoft products and technologies. These are based on our own internal training resources
