BuzzTap – Tapping into Fresh Sports News with IE8


BuzzTap (, has built a aggregated sporting news engine, and allows people to consume via a traditional web site and Twitter feeds. This staff looked at how Internet Explorer 8 could enhance their efforts, immediately jumped into action, and created a unique set of IE8 add-on’s.

The results are web slices for every major sports franchise and major colleges and a unique spin on visual search. is not a household name yet, but they certainly utilized Internet Explorer in a big way. Consider that they have filtered news for NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, Premier soccer, and a host of college teams – and a considerable Twitter following (sporting news by team).

Consequently, buzztap built the following IE8 add-on’s that leverage the buzztap engine:

  • The Top Buzz web slice for the top news of the day (on the home page)
  • News web slices for:
    • MLB (30 franchises)
    • NBA (30 franchises)
    • NFL (32 franchises)
    • NHL (30 franchises)
    • Premier soccer (20 franchises)
    • Colleges (89 institutions)
  • A very unique search provider (see examples on the blog post)
    When using the search text box, you get a list of the teams matching your text.
  • When using as an accelerator, a preview window appears with traditional text search results.
