In Open Value Subscription, can I order Office Professional for some PCs and Office Small Business for the others?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE: As of October, 2008, the “Build Your Own Platform” model is now available that lets you mix and match your versions of Microsoft Office through Open Value Subscription. Here is the post that explains this new option for you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

With Open Value Subscription, remember that your initial order must contain at least one Enterprise product on a company-wide basis. Plus, if you recall from prior posts, Enterprise products have to be ordered on a company-wide basis. With these two pieces of information, you can determine the answer to the question stated in the title above pretty easily. Here’s how:

  1. You want Office Pro for your company through Open Value Subscription.
  • Since Office Professional is an Enterprise product, it would be a qualifying item to start a new Open Value Subscription agreement with
  • Since Office Professional is an Enterprise product, it would need to be ordered on a company-wide basis

You want Office Small Business for your company through Open Value Subscription.

  • Since Office Small Business is an Enterprise product, it would be a qualifying item to start a new Open Value Subscription agreement with
  • Since Office Small Business is an Enterprise product, it would need to be ordered on a company-wide basis

Given points #1 and #2, here’s what you know:

  1. Office Professional must be ordered on a company-wide basis, which means you can’t order it for just some computers, it has to be ordered for all computers
  2. Office Small Business must be ordered on a company-wide basis, which means you can’t order it for just some computers, it has to be ordered for all computers
  3. If neither program can be ordered for anything less than every computer in the company (i.e. company-wide), then you can’t order Office Professional for ½ of the computers (that would not be company-wide) and Office Small Business for ½ of the computers (that would not be company-wide), for example.

So the answer to the question is, no, you cannot mix-and-match the Office products under Open Value Subscription because they are company-wide offerings. Yes, I could have just given the answer and made this a one paragraph post; however, I thought it would be more informative to explain why the answer is what it is.
