Update to Office 2010 SP1 to prevent unintentional installation of SharePoint Workspace

We are pleased to announce the release of an update for the issue described in KB2612800 (Office 2010 SP1 installs SharePoint Workspace). This update is available on the Microsoft Download Center, start with the KB link to find the correct version.

This update is designed to correct an issue with SharePoint Workspace 2010, where components are installed during the Office 2010 SP1 update even if they were explicitly not included during the Office Professional Plus original installation. In certain situations, Microsoft Office Groove 2007 is upgraded to SharePoint Workspace 2010 when you install Office SP1.

KB2598245 Description of the Office 2010 update: March 29, 2012 https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2598245

This is a preventive fix that needs to be applied prior to the installation of SP1 to prevent the SharePoint Workspace (SPW) feature from being faulted in by SP1 or a later update. (If you already have installed SP1, please check the steps described in KB2612800)

You can access directly the patch from the following locations:

If you are using the Updates folder for new installations of Office 2010 and including SP1 MSP files:

  1. Extract the contents of the hotfix executable to a temporary location using the “/extract:<path>” switch.

  1. Copy the pre_rmaddlocal-x-none.msp and osetup.dll files, SP1 MSP files, and any other update or OCT related MSP files into the Updates folder. The osetup.dll file can be found in the Admin subfolder of the folder that the hotfix is extracted to.
  2. The presence of the updated osetup.dll file will cause the pre_ patch to be applied before SP1, and after any customization patches.
