The Volume Activation Services Server role allows for the configuration of a KMS host server via a new user interface. Prior to the Volume Activation Services role, administrators were required to setup KMS through the SLMGR.vbs command line utility. The Volume Activation Services role also allows for the configuration of Active Directory-Based Activation.
