Exercise - Provision Starter Portal

The purpose of this hands-on-lab is to introduce Dynamics 365 Portal provisioning process.

The exercises work best when you have some sample data to work with. Depending on if the environment you are working with, you may want to install some sample data to assist with exercises. Dynamics 365 does provide the ability to add sample data as needed. If the environment you are working in does not have any sample data installed, follow these steps add or remove sample data to install the sample data into your environment.

  • Locate Portal Add-On application in Dynamics 365 Administration Centre
  • Complete the initial portal configuration
  • Select the target audience and the starter portal type
  • Provision and access the portal
  • Create additional portal pages

Before We Begin


A System Administrator access to Dynamics 365 instance with Dynamics 365 for Customer Service solution installed.


High Level Steps

Provisioning portal is a straightforward process. It is mostly about selecting the right audience and starter portal type best suited for your organization.

  • Locate Portal Add-On application in Dynamics 365 Administration Centre
  • Click Manage to start the portal provisioning process
  • Complete the required details, select the required starter portal type, and start the provisioning process
  • Once the portal is provisioned, add News page to your portal using Dynamics 365 Portals App.

Detailed Steps

Provision Customer Self-Service Portal

  1. Navigate to the Power platform Administration Center at https://aka.ms/ppac

  2. Expand Admin centers then select Dynamics 365


  4. Select Portal Add-On

  5. Click Manage

  6. Enter the following data

    • Name: the portal name of your choice. This name will replace Portal Add-On in the Dynamics 365 Administration Center.

    • Portal development status: Select status of your choice. This field is informational only and indicates the current status of the portal.

    • Portal URL: a unique URL for your portal.


This URL can be later changed to a vanity domain name, e.g. www.contoso.com.

  • Dynamics 365 Instance: Select the target instance.

  • Portal Language: Select the base language for your portal. If you would like to use a language different from the base one, it needs to be added in your Dynamics 365 instance.

  • Portal Administrator: Select your user account or another user who will be the portal administrator. All users with System Administrator role in the selected instance will appear here.

  • Portal Audience: Select Customer.

  • Portal to be deployed: Select Customer Self-Service Portal

  1. Select Enable portal for early upgrade to receive updates as they become available
  2. Press Submit
  3. When prompted, read and Accept Terms of Service.

The provisioning process typically takes 10-15 minutes. When the process is complete, the portal will be provisioned and available for further configuration.

Add Portal Content

  1. Navigate to https://home.dynamics.com.

  2. Select Dynamics 365 Portals app. If app cannot be located, verify that filter does not accidentally exclude your instance.

  3. Select Web Pages

  4. Click New

  5. Enter the following values:

    • Name: News
    • Website: select Customer Self-Service
    • Parent Page: select Home
    • Partial URL: news
    • Page Template: select Full Page
    • Publishing State: select Published
  6. Press Save.

  7. Scroll to Localized Content section and select the first record.

  8. Enter the following values:

    • Title: Contoso News
    • Copy (HTML): Welcome to Contoso!
  9. Press Save.

  10. Manually enter into a browser your portal URL followed by news so that the full URL looks like https://contoso.com/news.

  11. Verify that the page is displayed correctly
