Release notes for Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (Preview)

These release notes provide information about new features and non-security updates that are included in Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (Preview) updates for Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, Microsoft 365 Apps for business, and the subscription versions of the desktop apps for Project and Visio.

New, or updated, features are released to Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (Preview) on the second Tuesday of March and September.

Access

  • We fixed an issue caused while attempting to support Unicode character in unique identifier column.

Excel

  • We fixed an issue where differences in macros would not be detected in some cases when using the Compare Files feature of the Inquire add-in or when running Spreadsheet Compare from Start.

  • We fixed an issue where running a VBA script / add-in on a workbook with chart sheet may cause Excel to close unexpectedly.

Outlook

  • We fixed an issue where the app closed unexpectedly when replying or forwarding an email while an Event-Based Add-In is running in the background.

  • We fixed an issue where the user saw a grey box (add-in loading experience for Viva Insights) when trying to open the add-in (Viva Insights) from ribbon button, infobar or actionable message in Outlook win32. The issue only occurred when using trusted sandbox to host the Viva Insights.

  • We fixed an issue that caused "No response required" to show on all forwarded meeting invites for delegates of room mailboxes when the Shared Calendar Improvements feature was enabled.

  • We fixed an issue where the user would get an error when attempting to open a shared contacts folder for which they had editor or delegate permissions.

  • We fixed an issue that caused users so see the error message "The attempted operation failed. An object could not be found" when searching an LDAP address book.

  • We fixed an issue that caused the "Play on phone" button to be enabled in scenarios where it should not have been enabled.

  • We fixed an issue that caused users to see multiple copies of a shared calendar rendered in certain circumstances.

  • We fixed an issue where calendars were not selected in the nav pane when using "Open Shared Calendar".

Project

  • We fixed an issue where mask separator used an asterick (*) if it matched with list separator. In filters * is used for regular expressions which caused errors and unexpected behavior if value contained it. A pipe (|) is now used.

Word

  • We fixed an issue where a potential close unexpected occurred when iterating through pages in a Word document collection using a macro.

  • We fixed an issue in which the cursor would scroll to the end of the document after deleting a paragraph mark.

  • We fixed a potential performance issue when searching keywords in a large Word document.

Office Suite

  • We fixed an issue when opening up the font dropdown in Excel, the highlighted font was not the one currently selected in the document.

  • We fixed an issue with displaying embedded Excel spreadsheets in other applications.

  • We fixed an issue in Word where SVG files may be displayed as a broken link (Red-X).

  • We fixed an issue that caused shared calendars to be in an unselected state after adding them.

  • We fixed a performance issue when opening Word documents with thousands of track changes.

Office Suite

  • Excel 4.0 (XML) macros will be disabled by default to improve security for Microsoft 365 customers.: To help protect customers, Excel 4.0 (XML) macros will be disabled by default in Microsoft 365. We encourage you to migrate these macros to the latest version of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Learn more

Outlook

  • Last Sign In / Suspicious Sign In: Outlook now tells you when and where you last signed into your account, and alerts you if any suspicious sign-in activity is detected.

  • Microsoft Search powered compose (To\CC\BCC) suggestions: Adding people to the To\CC line is now powered by Microsoft Search.

  • Read messages with fewer distractions: Make it easier to focus on messages with custom text spacing, page colors, column width, and line focus, by turning on Immersive Reader.

  • Browse Groups OPX: OPX experience for Browse Groups to support engineering agility.

  • Sensitivity label audit logging: When users apply, change, or remove sensitivity labels on their documents and emails, that information is now made available to administrators in the Microsoft 365 audit logs.

  • Turn on shared calendar improvements: For shared calendars in Office 365, Outlook can update these calendars using the REST API. Turn on the preview for faster and more reliable updates to shared calendars.

PowerPoint

  • Tell your stories with animated GIFs: Animated GIFs are now supported in the Office editor - your documents just got snazzier Learn more

  • Support for Windows 10 Large Text setting: You can use the Large Text setting in Windows 10 (version 1809 and later) to make text larger so that it is easier to read. It works well in PowerPoint for Windows.

Access

  • This update fixed an issue where an application would stop working and generate an error message such as "Cannot open any more databases"; the issue could also prevent Access from shutting down properly.

  • We fixed an issue where an error was attempting to use the DAO API from non-Office applications would stop responding with message, "The operating system is not presently configured to run this application."

  • This change fixes an issue that may cause an application that used the OLEDB API to open an Access database (.accdb file) to close unexpectedly if the database contains links to SharePoint lists.

  • We fixed an issue that caused an application to close unexpectedly when connection to an Access or Jet database using multiple threads.

  • We fixed an issue that can cause a custom application that uses OLEDB interfaces to open an Access database that contains links to SharePoint lists to close unexpectedly.

  • In certain customer configurations, it was discovered that document exports to PDF or XPS formats from Office would fail due to recent updates. This update fixed these regressions and reenabled export to these formats.

  • We fixed an issue where the app stops responding when we open privacy settings window, as the dialog manager is empty adding is not empty check as a defensive check.

Excel

  • We fixed issues where refreshing data for PivotTables would stop working when filtered values no longer existed in the data, and a subsequent query statement generated without the invalid filtered values to retry the refresh request was temporarily disabled and is now reenabled.

  • We fixed an issue where opening a .xlsm file in SpreedsheetCompare tool could cause the tool to stop responding.

  • We fixed an issue where shapes and form controls could not call VBA macros.

  • We fixed a performance issue when using slicers and accessibility tools.

  • We fixed an issue with the LOGEST worksheet function, where a transient overflow error was not handled and cleared, and incorrectly picked up for unrelated subsequent calculations.

  • We fixed an issue where the search text gets reset in Pivottable fields selection taskpane.

  • We fixed an issue with subtotal optimization when there is a hidden field in a Pivot Table.

  • The app was clearing out the value for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Common\UserInfo\Company in non-MSI installs of Office. We have fixed this issue which primarily affected customers using non-MSI versions of Office.

  • We fixed an issue where, under rare circumstances, the app could stop responding while calculating a workbook.

  • We fixed issue with subtotal optimization when there is a hidden field in a Pivot Table.

  • We fixed an issue where using a cell reference in a formula caused users to experience high CPU usage.

  • We fixed an issue where the original icon of the app was not displaying correctly if the source file was from a OneDrive location and the file name contained HTML encoding characters when adding an Excel, Word, or PowerPoint embedded object into an Excel file.

  • We fixed an issue where a query update caused the app to stop responding.

  • We fixed an issue with the LOGEST worksheet function, where a transient overflow error was not handled and cleared, and incorrectly picked up for unrelated subsequent calculations.

  • We fixed an issue where interacting with Forms control could cause Excel to close unexpectedly.

  • We fixed an issue with the WEBSERVICE worksheet function, where Excel would stop working in rare cases when calculations were canceled by the user.

  • We fixed an issue where newly created PivotTables could lose custom settings if the data source range was changed.

  • We fixed an issue where certain formula results weren't updated after their inputs had changed.

  • We fixed issue with subtotal optimization when there is a hidden field in a Pivot Table.

  • We fixed an issue that adjusts how gradients fill on a series in a waterfall chart aligns with gradient fills on series in a column chart

  • On a multi-monitor setup dialogs with two cell edit boxes would hide data from the user when selecting cells. This fix unhides that data from the UI dialog box. Change impacts the conditional formatting or series selection dialog boxes on a three monitor setup.

  • When you have an Microsoft Excel 97-2003 Worksheet object embedded inside another application such as a Word document, using the Convert feature to convert it to an Microsoft Excel Worksheet (Office OpenXML) object doesn't complete the conversion until you open the embedded object and make a change to it. This has been fixed so that the object is completely converted upon using the Convert feature.

  • We fixed an issue where the search text gets reset in Pivottable fields selection taskpane.

  • We fixed an issue where some worksheet functions were not appearing for users with certain languages.

  • We fixed an issue where automatic sensitivity labeling was not working for a few GCC-H tenants.

  • We fixed an issue where on opening an Excel file, the cell selection was off.

  • When opening linked tables to Dynamics, numbers may appear as small squares when the data is displayed. To work around this issue, open the link in Table Design view, and clear the Format property for any affected columns.

  • We fixed an issue where an application using the OLEDB API with the ACE.OLEDB.12.0 or ACE.OLEDB.16.0 provider was closing unexpectedly.

  • This version fixed a unexpected close which happened during save for some documents in tenants which opted into protected coauthoring if the local file cache had tenant Id datum formatted incorrectly.

  • In certain customer configurations, it was discovered that document exports to PDF or XPS formats from Office would fail due to recent updates. This update fixed these regressions and reenabled export to these formats.

  • We fixed an issue where the BizUD Gothic Japanese font was rendering differently between Office applications.

  • We fixed an issue where the app stops responding when we open privacy settings window, as the dialog manager is empty adding is not empty check as a defensive check.

OneNote

  • We fixed an issue which updated the hot key for creating a Quick Note to be Win + Alt + N.

Outlook

  • We fixed an issue that caused users to experience a stop responding when expanding conversations.

  • We fixed an issue that caused a sync to stop working when generating a preview.

  • We fixed an issue that caused users who are on Windows 11 or who are using the visual refresh through Coming Soon to see misaligned text when hovering over the mini calendar date.

  • We fixed an issue where the folder hierarchy did not synchronize all folders for very large primary mailboxes with more than 10000 folders.

  • We fixed an issue where a received email would not include a link to open the message.

  • We fixed an issue that caused all emails sent with Sensitivity labels to always apply the "Encrypt - Only" template which would result in incorrect behavior, allowing people to forward "recipients only" emails.

  • We fixed an issue that caused users to be able to download the MP3 attachment from protected voicemail messages.

  • We fixed an issue that caused users to see their default signatures stop being able to be inserted in new emails, replies, or forwards after a restart of Outlook.

PowerPoint

  • We fixed an issue where some pop-up UI elements could not be clicked, such as the Join Meeting pop-up in Outlook or the Welcome Back pop-up in PowerPoint.

  • The product is updated not to save changes to original cloud file with AutoSave off when Save a Copy operation is executed.

  • We fixed an issue when a user would change an original Portrait and bigger paper size document to a smaller paper size (e.g. from Letter to A5), its print out would be cut off (data loss).

  • We fixed an issue where the company info displayed comes from Info | Properties | Advanced Properties dialog for PowerPoint that is installed from C2R.

  • We fixed an issue so the app will no longer prompt for a password to modify it if the user explicitly opens the file in read-only mode.

  • This version fixed a unexpected close which happened during save for some documents in tenants which opted into protected coauthoring if the local file cache had tenant Id datum formatted incorrectly.

  • In certain customer configurations, it was discovered that document exports to PDF or XPS formats from Office would fail due to recent updates. This update fixed these regressions and reenabled export to these formats.

Project

  • We fixed an issue where users can now save projects to the Project Web Application even if the resources in the offline file have names that match enterprise resources.

  • We no longer overwrite local formatting settings when a user saves a server-based project as an MPP file.

  • We fixed an issue where, when programmatically adding new tasks to a project via CSOM, the tasks might not be inserted at the correct location if the new task's summary task is collapsed.

  • We fixed an issue when tasks are rescheduled in Project, manually scheduled tasks may be scheduled earlier than they should be.

  • We fixed an issue where manually scheduled tasks were rescheduled to earlier dates when the user opened projects that had been Saved As to a different name. Users should no longer see manually scheduled tasks rescheduled while opening these projects.

  • We fixed an issue where some projects would close unexpectedly when loading customized reports.

  • We fixed an issue where users were getting into a state where saving would not work. This fix makes it so that users can always save their work.

  • We fixed an issue where users can now save projects to the Project Web Application even if the resources in the offline file have names that match enterprise resources.

  • Users should no longer experience issues when printing progress lines on the Gantt chart.

Skype

  • We fixed an issue where a hybrid camera on some laptops did not show in SfB client.

  • We fixed an issue where the video share peek in a conversation window will close unexpectedly.

Visio

  • We fixed an issue where the user can now insert charts seamlessly without facing any issues where the app closes unexpectedly.

Word

  • We fixed an issue where some pop-up UI elements could not be clicked, such as the Join Meeting pop-up in Outlook or the Welcome Back pop-up in PowerPoint.

  • We fixed an issue where the theme picker in Word's File > Options menu for x64 users where the theme selected would not apply. The theme picker in the File > Account place continues to work and is unaffected by this change.

  • We fixed an issue where SVG images that contain external content may not show up.

  • This version fixed a unexpected close which happened during save for some documents in tenants which opted into protected coauthoring if the local file cache had tenant Id datum formatted incorrectly.

  • In certain customer configurations, it was discovered that document exports to PDF or XPS formats from Office would stop working due to recent updates. This update fixed these regressions and reenabled export to these formats.

  • We fixed an issue related where the app stopped responding when calling DCompositionCreateDevice.

  • We fixed an issue that caused the app to close unexpectedly when selecting Go to Comment for the first comment in a document.

  • We fixed an issue where the insert Online video button was disable.

  • We fixed an issue where the BizUD Gothic Japanese font was rendering differently between Office applications.

Office Suite

  • We fixed an issue where Word, Excel or PowerPoint would close unexpectedly when saving documents to the cloud.

  • We fixed an issue where Office apps may close unexpectedly when idling on clients that have large numbers of files cached.

  • We fixed an issue that caused contact cards to not show.

  • We fixed an issue in Outlook where custom VSTO controls stopped working after opening and switching between multiple windows and views.

  • We fixed an issue that completed the following changes:

  1. There was a bug in Outlook where the teaching callouts (tips) about the new look of Office did not appear. These will now appear.
  2. Many users of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote have missed the teaching callouts about the new look of Office, which include information about what changed and how to change settings, or toggle off the experience. This change retriggers these teaching callouts for users to be notified about the changes.
  • We fixed an issue where the teaching callouts (tips) about the new look of Office did not appear in Outlook. Now, users of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote are notified about the changes to the new look of Office, which includes information about what changed and how to change settings, or toggle off the experience.
