2.8.3.2.1 Hosted Cache Mode

The hosted cache server is initialized as described in [MS-PCHC] section 3.1.3. In addition, the server's cache can optionally be preloaded in one of the following ways:

  • Using [MS-PCCRR], retrieve the required blocks whose hashes are identified from an existing hosted cache server and insert them into the cache of the new hosted cache server.

  • Using [MS-PCCRTP] or [MS-SMB2], retrieve the hashes and blocks of required resources from a content server and insert them into the cache of the new hosted cache server.

In either method, the retrieval can be performed from a machine other than the hosted cache server and transported to the hosted cache server by using an implementation-specific intermediary format.

Preloading is never necessary because clients automatically retrieve missing content and offer it to the server as described in 2.5.4.4.1. However, preloading a server can result in a more immediate performance gain when client requests can be planned for.
