A Microsoft code name “Quadrant” workpad hosts and displays the content of a database in different views. This topic discusses the different tasks you can perform on a workpad. Workpads behave like child windows on the workspace in that they can overlap each other. Workpads can also be “floated” above the workspace itself.

Positioning and Changing the Size of a Workpad

This section describes the various ways to move and resize a workpad.

Displaying all Workpads

To display all workpads in the workspace, double-click anywhere in the workspace to toggle between the preferred zoom level and a zoom that shows all workpads. If this zoom makes the workpads too small to view in full, each workpad contains a label that displays its name.

Alternatively, you can click the View menu, click Zoom, and then click Zoom To All Workpads, or use the keyboard shortcut by pressing F12.

Resizing a Workpad

You can drag any edge of a workpad to change its size.

Resetting the Size of a Workpad

To reset the workpad to its default size, double-click the lower-right corner of the workpad.

Floating a Workpad

When you have zoomed out the workspace, you can quickly restore the size of an individual workpad by floating it. To float a workpad, press CTRL, and then click the workpad title. If the workpad title is too small, click the workpad, and then, on the Workpad menu, click Float. Alternatively, you can right-click the workpad and click Float.

Floated workpads appear in a layer above the workspace surface. Floated workpads appear over other workpads, and they are always viewed at 100%. All floated workpads overlap each other within that upper layer. Because floated workpads are in a layer above the workspace, panning or zooming a workspace has no effect on them.

To stop the workpad from floating, click the workpad and on the Workpad menu, clear Float. Alternatively, you can right-click the workpad and clear Float. This returns the workpad to its original position on the workspace, regardless of where it was positioned on the floated layer.

Closing a Workpad

To close the active workpad in the workspace, on the Workpad menu, click Close Workpad. Alternatively, click the X button on the upper-right corner of the workpad.

To close all workpads in the workspace, on the Workpad menu, click Close All Workpads.

Viewing and Editing Data in a Workpad

This section describes how you can browse and edit data in a workpad.

Scrolling in a Workpad

If the workpad size is not enough to accommodate all content in the viewer, scroll bars are available at the right and bottom edges of the workpad. You can use the scroll bars to navigate vertically or horizontally across the viewer. Alternatively, you can use the mouse wheel to scroll vertically.

Changing the View in a Workpad

To change the view in a workpad, look for the white triangle at the upper-right corner of the workpad. When you click the triangle, a drop-down list shows all available views. Click any item in the list and the workpad changes to the selected view.

Examining and Editing Data in a Workpad

You can edit data directly in the workpad. The editing experience varies depending on the viewer in the workpad. For more information, see the corresponding viewer topic in "Quadrant" User Interface Reference.

Examining a Specific Item in a Workpad

To examine an item in detail, double-click it in the workpad. A new workpad opens to the right of the existing workpad. If the screen is not large enough to accommodate the new workpad, the workspace pans to show the new workpad in its entirety.

Querying for Items in a Workpad

The Query bar under the Workpad name displays the query that is used to obtain the present data in the workpad. If the Query bar is not shown, right-click the workpad and select Query Bar. Alternatively, on the Workpad menu, click Show Query Bar. You can add clauses to the query to filter data to a select set, or to a specific entityFor more information about building queries, see How to: Use Queries in "Quadrant".
