Set Up E-Mail on an Amazon Kindle Fire

You can set up e-mail on your Amazon Kindle Fire using the Kindle Email app. When you use the Kindle Fire Email app, it uses POP or IMAP to connect to your account. POP or IMAP lets you use basic e-mail features such as being able to send and receive e-mail.

Finding your POP and IMAP server settings

Before you set up a POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail program, you need to look up your own POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP server settings.

  1. Sign in to your account using Outlook Web App. For help signing in, see How to Sign In to Outlook Web App.

  2. In Outlook Web App, on the toolbar, click Options > See All Options.

  3. On the Account page, click My Account > Settings for POP, IMAP, and SMTP access.

  4. The POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP server name and other settings you may need to enter are listed on the Protocol Settings page under POP setting or IMAP setting, and SMTP setting.

    Tip

    If you don’t want to write the settings down, keep the Protocol Settings dialog box open on your computer while you set up your Kindle Fire.

Set up POP or IMAP e-mail on an Amazon Kindle Fire

  1. Turn on your Kindle Fire. Make sure you have an active Wi-Fi Internet connection.

  2. From the home screen, tap Apps > Email. If you haven’t created an e-mail account on your Kindle Fire before, tap Start. Then, on the Select E-Mail Provider screen, tap Other. However, if you already have one or more e-mail accounts on your Kindle Fire, you may need to tap the menu icon > Add Account > Other. You may also need to tap the menu icon > Account > menu icon > Add Account > Other.

  3. On the Sign-In page, in Username, type your full e-mail address. In Password, type your password. Select Show Password to make sure you typed your password correctly. Tap Next.

  4. Tap POP 3 or IMAP. We recommend IMAP because IMAP supports more features.

  5. Under Incoming server settings, you'll notice that the settings are already filled in for you. You'll need to change some of those settings.

    1. In Security type, select SSL (always), if the server setting you looked up showed Encryption method: SSL.

    2. In IMAP server or POP server, type the server name you looked up in the previous section.

    3. In Authentication type, make sure PLAIN is selected.

    4. In Port, make sure it is set to 993 if you’re using IMAP. Make sure to use 995 if you’re using POP. Tap Next.

    5. If you’re using IMAP, in IMAP path prefix, leave the setting to the default value of (Automatic using NAMESPACE if available). Tap Next.

  6. Under Outgoing server settings, you'll notice that the settings are already filled in for you. You'll need to change some of those settings.

    1. In SMTP server, type the SMTP server name that you looked up in the previous section.

    2. In Security type, select TLS (always) if the server setting you looked up showed Encryption method: TLS. In Authentication type, make sure Automatic is selected.

    3. In Port, make sure 587 is selected. Under Port, make sure Require sign in is selected, and then tap Next.

  7. Under Inbox settings, in Folder poll frequency, select how often you want the mail app on your Kindle Fire to send and receive e-mail.

  8. On the Finish page, type a display name and account name. Keep the Send mail from this account by default selected if you want to send e-mail from this account by default. Tap View your inbox to access your e-mail.

What if I want to know more?

  • Connecting to your account with an e-mail program that uses POP and IMAP (for example, the Amazon Kindle Fire Email app), lets you send and receive e-mail from your account. However, POP and IMAP programs don't support the rich calendar and contact synchronization features that are available when you use a rich e-mail program such as Outlook Web App, Outlook 2010, or other e-mail programs that support Exchange ActiveSync.

  • If you’re a user of the desktop version of Outlook, you can import your e-mail contacts to your Amazon Kindle mail using the vCard (.vcf) file format. You can also import contacts from Gmail or Yahoo by simply using the Kindle Fire mail app.
