Supervision Policies

Applies to: Live@edu

Supervision policies control who can send e-mail to and receive e-mail from the users in your organization, and filter and reject e-mail that contains objectionable words. In Live@edu organizations, supervision policy settings can help primary and secondary school administrators comply with some requirements of the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA).

Note   If supervision policies don't meet your business needs, consider using organization-wide rules, also known as transport rules for greater flexibility and customization. For more information, see Organization-Wide Rules.

When do you use a supervision policy?

You can configure supervision policies to address the following scenarios:

  • **Closed campus   **You configure inbound and outbound e-mail restrictions so users can send e-mail to or receive e-mail from addresses inside the organization only. You can set up organization-wide exceptions so e-mail can be sent to or from specific domains and distribution groups. You can also configure per-user exceptions so users can send e-mail to and receive e-mail from specific addresses outside the organization. For example, in a school, you can configure an organization-wide exception that allows the exchange of e-mail between students and faculty, and you can configure specific exceptions so students can send and receive e-mail from their parents or guardians.
  • Bad word filter   E-mail that contains content that is specifically banned can’t be sent or received. You can use this policy to reject e-mail that contains profanity or other objectionable words.
  • Anti-bullying   You can prevent a “bully” from sending e-mail messages to specific students by adding the bully's e-mail address as an entry on a student's supervision list.

How do you configure a supervision policy?

In the Exchange Control Panel:

  • The Safety tab   Here you configure the bad words and closed campus supervision policies.
  • The properties page of a user's mailbox   In the Mail Control section, you configure individual exceptions to the closed campus policy and define the alleged bully of the user.
  • The Rules tab   Here you can't view, open, or modify supervision policies, but you can enable or disable them as follows:
    • Make the closed campus supervision policy one-way   When you enable or disable the closed campus supervision policy on the Safety tab, inbound and outbound mail flow is affected. If you want to restrict mail flow in one direction only, you can use the Rules tab. For example, if you want to restrict inbound mail flow and allow all outbound mail flow, you can first enable the closed campus supervision policy on the Safety tab, but then you can disable the outbound restriction of the closed campus supervision policy by disabling the __closedcampusoutbound "rule" on the Rules tab.
    • Enable or disable the anti-bullying supervision policy   By default, the anti-bullying supervision policy is enabled for the organization, but mail flow between users isn't restricted until you add a bully's e-mail address as an entry on a user's supervision list. You can enable or disable anti-bullying for the entire organization by enabling or disabling the __antibullying "rule" on the Rules tab.
