Run a Litigation Hold Report

Applies to: Office 365 for professionals and small businesses, Office 365 for enterprises

If your organization is involved in a legal action, you may have to take steps to preserve relevant data, such as e-mail messages, that may be used as evidence. In situations like this, you can use litigation hold to retain all e-mail sent and received by specific people or retain all e-mail sent and received in your organization for a specific time period. For more information about what happens when a mailbox is on litigation hold and how enable and disable it, see Put a Mailbox on Litigation Hold.

Use the Litigation Hold Report to keep track of the following types of changes made to a mailbox in a given time period:

  • Litigation hold was enabled.
  • Litigation hold was disabled.

For each of these change types, the report includes the user who made the change and the time and date the change was made.

Note   Litigation hold isn’t available for Microsoft Office 365 for professionals and small businesses or Microsoft Live@edu, so running a litigation hold report won’t return any search results.

Run a litigation hold report

  1. Select Manage My Organization > Roles & Auditing > Auditing.
  2. Click Run a litigation hold report.
Microsoft Exchange runs the report for any litigation hold changes made to any mailbox in the past two weeks.
  3. To view the changes for a specific mailbox, under Search Results, select the mailbox. View the search results in the details pane.

Want to narrow the search results?

Select the start date, end date, or both, and select specific mailboxes to search. Click Search to re-run the report.

Note To access and run any of the reports on the Auditing Reports tab in the Exchange Control Panel, a user has to be assigned the necessary permissions. For more information, see the "Give users access to Auditing Reports" section of Use Auditing Reports in Exchange Online.
