Configure a UM IP Gateway

Applies to: Office 365 for enterprises

UM IP gateways create a connection between Unified Messaging and your telephone system. They are required for Telex and E.164 dial plans. You don't need a UM IP gateway on UM systems with SIP URI dial plans.

When you configure a UM IP gateway, you're telling UM whether to allow the gateway to dial outside your organization and whether to send message waiting notifications from UM to a user's physical telephone handset. You can also change the information about your physical telephone system, if necessary.

For more information about how to create a UM IP gateway and forward calls from your telephone system to your UM IP gateway, see Connect UM to Your Telephone System with UM IP Gateways.

How do I configure a UM IP gateway?

Note   Under Forwarding address, the address of your UM IP gateway is shown. This is the address that you enter in your physical session border controller (SBC), IP gateway, or IP PBX device to forward and receive calls to and from UM. For more information about how to set up your physical device for UM, see Forward Calls from Your Physical Telephone Device to UM.

  1. Select Manage My Organization > Phone & Voice > UM IP Gateways.
  2. Select the gateway you want to configure, and then select Details.
  3. Under Name, the name you gave the gateway is shown. You can change the name to any name that is unique in your organization, up to 64 characters long.
  4. Under Address, the FQDN for your physical telephone device is shown. You can edit the address if it changes.
  5. To configure the gateway to allow users to dial outside of your organization, select the Allow outgoing calls through this UM IP gateway check box. You must allow outgoing calls to enable Find Me and Play on Phone.
  6. To configure the gateway to transfer message waiting indicators from user mailboxes to your physical telephone system so the message waiting lights on users' physical telephones alerts them to UM voice messages, select the Allow message waiting indicator box.
  7. Click Save to save your changes.
