Plan to Migrate UM-Enabled Mailboxes

If you want to migrate UM-enabled mailboxes from your on-premises Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010 organization to the cloud, you have to decide which migration method best supports the end result you want. Let's look at the options:

All migration methods support migrating the voice mail, voice mail greetings, and spoken name for each user.

Note If your on-premises mailboxes aren't UM-enabled, but you intend to deploy UM in the cloud, migrate the mailboxes to the cloud before you enable UM on them. If your on-premises mailboxes are UM-enabled, but you don't intend to deploy UM in the cloud, make sure to disable UM on the mailboxes before you migrate them to the cloud.

If the mailboxes you are migrating are enabled for unified messaging (UM) and you are using cutover Exchange migration   You have to disable UM on the mailboxes before you migrate them. You can then enable UM on the mailboxes after the migration is complete. If you want mailboxes to remain UM-enabled throughout the migration process, follow the instructions for UM migration that support a hybrid deployment.
