Plan to Migrate UM-Enabled Mailboxes
Applies to: Office 365 for enterprises
If you want to migrate UM-enabled mailboxes from your on-premises Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010 organization to the cloud, you have to decide which migration method best supports the end result you want. Let's look at the options:
- If you want UM-enabled mailboxes both in the cloud and on-premises permanently, and you need a high level of data integrity, use the instructions for UM migration that support a hybrid deployment. For more information, see Exchange Hybrid Deployment and Migration with Office 365.
- If you want UM-enabled mailboxes both in the cloud and on-premises temporarily, while you migrate mailboxes in batches to UM in the cloud, use a staged Exchange migration Here's how: Migrate Mailboxes to the Cloud with a Staged Exchange Migration. For more information about UM and remote mailbox moves, see Understand Remote Mailbox Move and UM.
- If you want to migrate all UM-enabled mailboxes to the cloud at the same time and don't need to migration users' voice mail PINs, use a cutover Exchange migration. Here's how: Migrate All Mailboxes to the Cloud with a Cutover Exchange Migration.
The following table summarizes the key differences for UM between the three migration methods.
Migration needs | Hybrid deployment | Staged Exchange migration | Cutover Exchange migration |

All migration methods support migrating the voice mail, voice mail greetings, and spoken name for each user.
Note If your on-premises mailboxes aren't UM-enabled, but you intend to deploy UM in the cloud, migrate the mailboxes to the cloud before you enable UM on them. If your on-premises mailboxes are UM-enabled, but you don't intend to deploy UM in the cloud, make sure to disable UM on the mailboxes before you migrate them to the cloud.
If the mailboxes you are migrating are enabled for unified messaging (UM) and you are using cutover Exchange migration You have to disable UM on the mailboxes before you migrate them. You can then enable UM on the mailboxes after the migration is complete. If you want mailboxes to remain UM-enabled throughout the migration process, follow the instructions for UM migration that support a hybrid deployment.
