Types and Use of UM Dial Plans

Applies to: Office 365 for enterprises

The type of UM dial plan you choose depends on how you provide your dial tone to Exchange Online UM. The type of dial plan defines the syntax, format, and protocols that UM uses to communicate with your telephone system. Here are the three dial plan URI types and what they do:

  • SIP URI   Users are identified in the system by a URI, for example, name@domain.com. Select this type if you are connecting Microsoft Lync Server 2010 to Exchange Online UM.
  • Telephone extension   Users are identified in the system by their telephone extension, for example, x58493. Select this type if you are connecting to UM using a traditional PBX or IP PBX telephone system.
  • E.164   Users are identified by their phone number in E.164 format, for example, +14255550123. Only select this type if your IP gateway or IP PBX can send only E.164 numbers to UM. This is an unusual setting and is rarely required.

Each type of UM dial plan requires slightly different set up information. After you select and create a type of UM dial plan, click Details, and specify the configuration for that dial plan type.
