Money: MSN Money Investment Toolbox doesn't install

If you are having trouble downloading the MSN Money Investment Toolbox, a number of factors can cause this to happen. Try the following solutions, in the order listed:

Refresh the page

To refresh the page in Internet Explorer, click the Refresh button on the toolbar, or press the F5 key on your keyboard.

Respond to a security warning dialog box in Internet Explorer

If you see a security message asking if you want to install the MSN Money Investment Toolbox Installer, click Install.

Respond to a yellow warning bar across the top of Internet Explorer

If you see a yellow warning bar across the top of Internet Explorer that says This site might require the following ActiveX control: 'MSN Money Investment Toolbox Installer' from 'Microsoft Corporation':

  1. Click the yellow bar, and then click Install ActiveX Control.

  2. In the Do you want to install this software? box, click Install.

  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

On a computer running Windows, make sure you are logged on as an Administrator

To install the latest version of the Portfolio Manager on a computer running Windows, you must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group.

  1. Log off from Windows, and then log back on as a member of the Administrators group.

  2. Start Internet Explorer, sign in to MSN Money, and then try again to install the Portfolio Manager.

Make sure you are using Internet Explorer version 6.0 or later

To run the latest version of the Portfolio Manager, you must use Internet Explorer version 6.0 or later.

  1. To check your version number, on the Help menu in Internet Explorer, click About Internet Explorer.

  2. To download a newer version of Internet Explorer, go to the Internet Explorer website.

Add MSN Money to your list of trusted Web sites in Internet Explorer 6.0 or later

  1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.

  2. On the Security tab, click Trusted sites, and then click the Sites button.

  3. Clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.

  4. To treat all MSN sites as trusted sites, in the Add this Web site to the zone box type https://*.msn.com, and then click Add.

  5. To treat all Microsoft sites as trusted sites, in the Add this Web site to the zone box type https://*.microsoft.com, and then click Add.

  6. Click OK, and then click OK again.

Adjust the security settings for MSN Money in Internet Explorer

  1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.

  2. On the Security tab, click Internet (this is usually selected by default).

  3. Under Security level for this zone, click Custom Level.

  4. In the Reset to box, select Medium.

  5. Click OK, and then click OK again.

Add MSN Money to your list of trusted Web sites in MSN 8 or later

  1. On the MSN Help & Settings menu, click Settings.

  2. On the left side of your screen, click Privacy & security, and then click Privacy settings.

  3. Click Sites.

  4. Under Address of Web Site, type https://*.msn.com, and then click Allow.

    This adds all MSN sites to your Trusted sites.

  5. Click OK, and then click OK again.

Restart your computer

If you use Microsoft Money 2005 or earlier on this computer, the software for viewing your portfolio in a Web browser may not install properly. Restarting your computer can sometimes solve this problem.

  1. Close all programs, and then restart your computer.

  2. Return to the page you were trying to view.

Remove and reinstall the MSN Money Investment Toolbox

The downloaded program files for the MSN Money Investment Toolbox may have been corrupted. To correct this, remove and reinstall the Investment Toolbox. To learn more, see the related topics below.

Temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall software

If you tried reinstalling the Investment Toolbox and it still isn't working, you may have other software on your computer, such as antivirus or firewall software, that is interfering with the installation. Try disabling your antivirus or firewall software temporarily, and then remove and reinstall the Investment Toolbox again.
