Set route and road-type preferences

  1. On the Route menu, click Route options.

  2. In the More route options dialog box, click Segments.

The default setting for each segment of a route is Quickest.

  3. For each segment of the route that you want to change, click the segment, and then click one of the following to set your preference:

    • Quickest for the most time-efficient route for the selected segment

    • Shortest for the shortest possible distance for the selected segment

    • Preferred roads to assign your road-type preferences to the selected segment

Note   Changing the preference for a route segment to Preferred roads has no effect on the route until you also set your road-type preferences.

    To set your road-type preferences

    1. Click Preferred road types.

    2. In the Preferred Roads dialog box, for each type of road listed, adjust the sliders to indicate your preference:

Move the slider to the right if you like using that type of road.

Move the slider to the left if you dislike using that type of road.

    3. Click OK to activate the new settings, or click Reset to return road preferences to the standard settings.

    Notes

    • The Preferred road types button is not available unless you select Preferred roads for at least one segment of your route.

    • The preferences you set apply to every segment of the route that you identify as Preferred roads. However, if the only road available in a segment is of a type that you set as Dislike, MapPoint will still use it to create the route.

    • MapPoint finds the route that best matches your preferences for a given route segment, even if it means you will be driving farther or longer than you would using other road-type preferences.

    • If you set both Interstates and limited-access roads and Other highways to Dislike, MapPoint still uses interstates when creating a route that covers a long distance.

  4. In the More route options dialog box, click OK.

  5. On the Route menu, point to Route, and then click Get directions.
