Team Edition for Testers Planning

Team Edition for Testers lets you create, manage, edit, and run tests, and also obtain and store test results. Several test types, including unit, Web, load, and manual tests, in addition to the measurement of code coverage, are integrated into Visual Studio. For more information, see Team Edition for Testers.

Visual Studio Team Edition for Testers can use a group of computers to generate simulated load for testing and to run tests remotely on several computers simultaneously. This group of computers consists of a single controller and one or more agents, which are collectively called a "rig." For more information, see Working with Controllers, Agents, and Rigs.

Hardware and Software Requirements

The hardware and software requirements for Team Edition for Testers are broken into two parts: the Visual Studio Team Edition for Testers and the requirements for your test rig.

The Visual Studio Team Edition for Testers requirements are the same as those for Visual Studio.

The test rig requirements are outlined as follows:

Supported Operating Systems

The following operating systems are supported for the agent and controller:

Controller

Windows Server 2003

Note

Load controllers cannot be installed on domain controllers.

Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Agent

Windows Server 2003

Windows XP Professional with Service Pack (SP2)

Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 (SP4)

Hardware Requirements

Team Edition for Testers hardware and software requirements are documented in the Team Edition for Testers installation guide and in the Team Edition for Testers documentation. For more information about Team Test rig hardware and software requirements, see Setting Up the Controller and Agent Functionality.

By default, SQL Express is installed with the controller and is used as the default store for load test results. Therefore, the controller runs an instance of SQL Express.

You can read more about the requirements in the Team Foundation Installation Guide. The latest version of the Team Foundation Installation Guide is available online at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=40042.
