Speech Guidelines

Overview of speech guidelines for the Tablet PC.

By using speech recognition on a Tablet PC, users control applications through voice input, in addition to mouse or keyboard input. The Tablet PC Input Panel enables users to employ speech to perform common operations and to enter text into documents. This can be a very powerful mechanism for interacting with a computer. Users can employ speech recognition to dictate text into any application that interacts with the Input Panel. Users can also select menus, toolbars, dialog boxes, and other application elements by using voice.

Speech input operates by using two speech input modes:

Speech capability is easily added to an application. Existing applications may be retrofitted to recognize speech input. These changes need not be extensive. In some cases, the changes require no modifications to existing code. In order to enable voice commands, however, applications must conform to Microsoft® Active Accessibility® guidelines.

For more information on how applications that use speech can conform to Active Accessibility guidelines, see Speech and Accessibility.
