When choosing a SIP phone for use with a Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API application, consider three options:

  • Microsoft Office Communicator Phone Edition 2007 R2 device

  • Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2

  • 2007 R2 version of Microsoft Office Communicator Web Access

Understanding SIP Phones

A SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) phone can natively connect to the Internet through SIP instead of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). A softphone is a software program integrated within your computer to serve as a telephone, typically using a headset. SIP clients, such as SIP phones and softphones, require software to send and receive calls. A SIP phone or softphone is a SIP peer and an endpoint because it connects the caller to the host through a SIP line without requiring a gateway.

Office Communicator Phone Edition 2007 R2 Device

With the Office Communicator Phone Edition 2007 R2 device you can:

  • Make outbound audio calls to phone users, answer inbound phone calls, and make Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls.

  • Set call-handling options to forward calls to another number or contact, so you can retrieve calls on your mobile phone, for example, when you are not in the office.

  • Keep a record of all phone conversations in Microsoft Outlook messaging and collaboration client.

  • Make calls from wherever you are located—regardless of whether you are inside or outside a firewall.

Office Communicator 2007 R2

With Office Communicator 2007 R2, a user can make an outbound call using their computer or a traditional desktop phone. For inbound calls, users can answer a call, redirect it to an alternate number or voice mail, or answer with an instant message.

2007 R2 version of Microsoft Office Communicator Web Access

Use the 2007 R2 version of Microsoft Office Communicator Web Access to send an instant message.
