When a Microsoft Office Communications client or custom client sends a request to Office Communications Server asking the server to store and disseminate a category of information such as user status, the client publishes a category. Alternatively, if a client sends a request to Office Communications Server asking the server to return a previously published category, the client subscribes to a category. For a definition of category, see Terminology.
