About deploying a model or model site

When you deploy a Planning Business Modeler model site, Planning Server makes all changes available to PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel and other applications, such as ProClarity 6.3 and Dashboard Designer. When you deploy a site for the first time, Planning Server creates and populates the data cube, based on the dimensions, member sets, models, or other elements that you specified.

After you deploy a model site for the first time, you can run calculations and model-to-model mappings, and you can author form and report templates. Every time that you deploy a model site, Planning Business Modeler validates all models in the model site.

Deploying a model site is distinct from saving a model site. A saved model site is updated on the computer that is running Planning Server, whereas a deployed model site is updated in the data sources that are used by PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel. When you save a model site, your work is synchronized with other users of Planning Business Modeler. When you deploy a model site, your work is synchronized with users of PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel.

You must deploy a model site to save changes to models or to dimension structures. After you create or update a model or dimension structures, you must deploy the model site to save these changes to the server.

Deploying a model site is not required for the following scenarios:

  • When you update user data security in a business role. Planning Business Modeler applies the change to data security as soon as you save the change.

  • When you create or update a workflow object during process management. Planning Business Modeler deploys workflow objects automatically as soon as they are saved.

    Note

Update requests are handled asynchronously, and the update may not be processed immediately. Therefore, you must refresh Planning Business Modeler (not deploy the model site) to make subsequent updates to a workflow object.

  • When you add business rules or model variables, or when you update rules and variables. To validate and save rules and variables, you deploy the rules and variables instead of deploying the model site.

When you add or update data in a model or model subsite that you have deployed, you can incrementally deploy the model by using the Reprocess model data option. When you reprocess a model, Planning Server updates the fact data in the PerformancePoint Planning Application database.
