Creating a Context-Specific Web Part

A context-specific Web Part enables the display of any information based on a predefined meaning of the current workspace. For example, based on the current user or location within the dashboard site, a context-specific Web Part can determine whether to show or hide itself. On the default search page, the Best Bets Web Part is an example of a context-specific Web Part that shows itself only if a match is found and defined as a best bet.

Category Browsing

Context-specific Web Parts support category browsing. A category is a group of related content that is organized by subject matter. This is typically a list of links to related information. When users browse through the different categories, they see only links to related topics. By using a category-specific Web Part, specific information can be displayed for each category folder. This enables you to provide more information about the category without having the user open each related link.

The information displayed can be any type of information, such as:

  • A company organization chart, if the category represents organizational information.
  • Category-specific sales information, if the category represents sales divisions.
