Microsoft® SharePoint™ Portal Server 2001 combines the ability to create corporate dashboard sites with document management, search, content crawling, subscription notifications, and team collaboration features.

The following figure shows the main components of SharePoint Portal Server.

Internet Information Services

Microsoft Windows® 2000 Internet Information Services (IIS) hosts the dashboard site and provides remote World Wide Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV)-based document management and search.

Dashboard Factory

A dashboard factory is the code engine that assembles Web Parts into a layout suitable for rendering in a dashboard view. The dashboard factory interacts with the underlying store. For more information about dashboard sites, see Dashboard Site User Interface Overview.

Document Management Services

Document management services provide users with the ability to create and publishdocuments. Users with appropriate permissions can check out documents, edit the documents, and then check the documents back in. For more information about document management, see Document Management Overview.

Index

The Index engine is a component of the Search service that processes portions of text and properties filtered from content sources, and determines which properties are written to the full text index. For more information about crawling, see Content Crawling and Search Overview.

Subscription Manager

The Subscription Manager enables a user to create subscriptions to content on the dashboard site, and be notified when changes to the content occur. For more information about subscriptions, see Subscriptions Overview.

SharePoint Portal Server Store

The SharePoint Portal Server store consists of:

  • Schema Resources.   SharePoint Portal Server schema defines a number of internal searchable and non-searchable properties. These properties determine the behavior of the object.   • Discussions.   Web discussions provide a way to discuss documents with other users. SharePoint Portal Server returns discussion items in search results if the search feature is enabled for discussions. Discussion items are not secured. Discussion items may be visible to users who do not have access to the document being discussed.
  • Folders and Policies.   Documents are stored in document storage folders and subfolders. Document access security is controlled by user roles. Subfolders inherit security settings from their parent folder by default. For more information about roles and permissions, see Roles and Permissions.
  • Documents and History.   SharePoint Portal Server records the version history of a document to help the user track changes and eliminate the possibility of authors overwriting another user's modifications.
  • Full Text Index.   A full-text index, called a workspace catalog, facilitates quick searching of the full text of content. Every workspace includes a full-text index that enables users to search for documents available from that workspace. For more information about indexing, see Content Crawling and Search Overview.
  • Subscriptions.   Subscriptions are queries that enable the user to be notified of changes made to a document, a folder, a category, or a specific collection of search results. For more information about subscriptions, see Subscriptions Overview.
  • Subscription Results.   Users can view notifications on the Subscriptions Summary Web Part or on the Subscriptions dashboard of the dashboard site. Notifications can also be sent to users by e-mail. Users can create or delete their subscriptions at any time. For more information about subscriptions, see Subscriptions Overview.
