This Computer Requires the Update Described in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 979099

[This topic is intended to address a specific issue called out by the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool. You should apply it only to systems that have had the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool run against them and are experiencing that specific issue. The Exchange Server Analyzer Tool, available as a free download, remotely collects configuration data from each server in the topology and automatically analyzes the data. The resulting report details important configuration issues, potential problems, and nondefault product settings. By following these recommendations, you can achieve better performance, scalability, reliability, and uptime. When you run the Microsoft Exchange Best Practices Analyzer Tool during the installation of Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, the tool examines the operating system to determine whether the following update is installed.

979099

An update is available to remove the application manifest expiry feature from AD RMS clients

To determine whether the application manifest expiry update is installed, the Microsoft Exchange Best Practices Analyzer examines the version of Msdrm.dll that is installed on the following host operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

  • Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) - Exchange Server Administration Tools installation only

  • Windows 7 - Exchange Server Administration Tools installation only

During this process, the Best Practices Analyzer performs the following actions:

  • It parses the version number of Msdrm.dll to determine whether the installed version of Msdrm.dll was obtained from the LDR service branch. In this scenario, the Best Practices Analyzer requires the updated version of Msdrm.dll from the LDR service branch.

  • It parses the version number of Msdrm.dll to determine whether the installed version of Msdrm.dll was obtained from the GDR service branch. In this scenario, the Best Practices Analyzer requires that at least the updated version of Msdrm.dll from the GDR service branch is installed.

If the update is not installed, the Best Practices Analyzer generates the following warning message:

This computer requires the update described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 979099. Without this update, the RMS features may stop working.

Exchange 2010 requires the Rights Management Service (RMS) to create RMS-protected content and also to allow access to the content. If the RMS manifest that Exchange uses expires, information rights management (IRM) features in Exchange will no longer work. This may affect access to RMS-protected content for users in the organization.

To resolve this issue, install the application manifest expiry update on the computer. To obtain this update, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 979099, An update is available to remove the application manifest expiry feature from AD RMS clients.
