Move and migrate servers and server farms (Search Server 2008)
Applies To: Microsoft Search Server 2008
Topic Last Modified: 2009-02-23
This topic contains the information that is required to help you select and plan hardware and software changes to your Microsoft Search Server 2008 deployment. There are three specific paths that you can take to change a farm:
Move Use the procedures for moving your farm or components when you are changing to different hardware. For example, use these procedures if you move to computers that have faster processors or larger hard disks.
Migrate Use the procedures for migrating your farm or components when you are changing to a different platform or operating system. For example, use these procedures if you change from Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008.
Upgrade Use the procedures for upgrading your farm or components when you are changing to a different version of Search Server 2008.
Decide whether to move, migrate, or upgrade
The following examples can help you understand the differences between moving, migrating, and upgrading:
Changing from a test farm environment to a production environment involves moving your farm. If you have set up a new Search Server 2008 farm in a test environment and want to transition to a production environment that uses similar hardware, use the Move to another farm (Search Server 2008) procedure.
Changing from 32-bit to 64-bit hardware is a migration process. You might have to change to 64-bit hardware if you intend to run Search Server 2008 in a Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V environment. To change to 64-bit hardware, use the Migrate an existing server farm to a 64-bit environment (Office SharePoint Server 2007) procedure.
If you have run out of space on your current database server, you can move the databases to a new, larger disk.
- If you want to move all the databases that are associated with your farm, use the [Move all databases (Search Server 2008)](cc770225\(v=office.12\).md) procedure. - If you want to move only content databases, use the [Move content databases (Search Server 2008)](cc825791\(v=office.12\).md) procedure.
