Step 10: Create WCF Broker Nodes Running Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

Applies To: Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

Before you create the WCF broker nodes that you will include in a failover cluster, review the following requirements.

Important

  • Any server that you plan to include in a failover cluster must run Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise or Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter. You cannot use Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 as the operating system for a server that will be in a failover cluster. You must also meet the other requirements that are listed in Requirements for Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 in Failover Clusters.

  • WCF broker nodes must be connected to the enterprise network.

  • WCF broker nodes that you plan to include in a failover cluster must not run other HPC cluster node roles (head node or compute node).

Create WCF broker nodes

When you run Setup for HPC Pack 2008 R2, you must choose the type of HPC cluster node that you want to install. One of the choices is a WCF broker node.

To create WCF broker nodes

  1. Run HPC Pack 2008 R2 Setup on the server from distribution media or from a network location.

  2. On the Getting Started page, click Next to begin the installation.

  3. On the Select Installation Edition page, select HPC Pack 2008 R2 Express, and then click Next.

  4. On the Microsoft Software License Terms page, read or print the software license terms in the license agreement, and accept or reject the terms. If you accept the license terms, click Next.

  5. On the Select Installation Type page, select Join an existing HPC cluster by creating a new WCF broker node.

    WCF broker node installation

  6. On the Join Cluster page, type the name of the head node as it is displayed in Failover Cluster Manager.

    Important

On this page of the wizard, do not type the name of a physical server. Type the name of the clustered instance of the head node as it is displayed in Failover Cluster Manager.

  7. Follow the instructions in the wizard to complete the installation.

  8. Repeat this procedure for each server that will be in the failover cluster for the WCF broker nodes.

Add WCF broker nodes to the HPC cluster

After you create WCF broker nodes, you must add them to the HPC cluster. You will configure them in a failover cluster later.

To add WCF broker nodes to the HPC cluster

  1. If you have not already created a broker node template without an operating system, create one as follows:

    1. On a head node server (not a broker node), start HPC Cluster Manager.

    2. In Configuration, in the Deployment To-do List, click Create a node template. The Create Node Template Wizard appears.

    3. Select Broker node template, and then click Next.

    4. Specify a name, and optionally, a description for the template, and then click Next.

    5. Select Without operating system, and then click Next.

    6. On the Specify Windows Updates page, optionally select or specify update options, as appropriate for your organization. Click Next.

    7. On the Review page, review your settings, and if they are correct, click Create.

  2. On a head node server or a broker node, if HPC Cluster Manager is not already open, open it.

  3. In Node Management, in the Actions pane, click Add Node. The Add Node Wizard appears.

  4. On the Select Deployment Method page, click Add compute nodes or broker nodes that have already been configured, and then click Next.

  5. On the Before Deploying page, click Next.

  6. On the Select New Nodes page, make sure that a broker node template without an operating system is selected.

  7. Wait until the list of new nodes appears, and then select the WCF broker nodes that you created.

If the WCF broker nodes that you created do not appear, confirm that they are started and joined to the domain, and review network settings such as DNS settings.

  8. Click Add.

  9. On the Completing the Add Node Wizard page, make sure Go to Node Management to track progress is selected, and then click Finish. To see more details about the current operation, in the center pane, select the operation and view the information in the lower pane (the Detail pane).

  10. In Node Management, in the Navigation Pane, under Nodes, click By Group, and then click WCFBrokerNodes. Confirm that the expected nodes appear in the list.

    Note

Leave the new WCF broker nodes in their current state (do not bring them online).
