Viewing reports

This topic describes how to view one-time reports and recurring report jobs. For details on creating a report job, see Creating recurring reports.

Reports are viewed via a standard browser and include hyperlinks to help you navigate to the content you want to review. There are subtle differences between how the two types of report jobs are viewed; the differences are described in the sections below.

One-time reports

One-time reports provide an easy way to create reports as you need them. After configuring a one-time report job with the One-Time Report wizard, the job configuration appears in the details pane under One-Time Reports, where its name, type, and start and end dates are also displayed.

To generate and view a one-time report

To generate and view a one-time report, in the details pane, select it and click Generate and View Selected Report, either from the right-click context menu or from the Tasks pane. The report will open in a browser window.

If you configured the one-time report to publish its data to a directory, you can provide access to the report without accessing the Forefront TMG Management console. For details, see Viewing published reports.

Recurring report jobs

Recurring report jobs allow you to review log activity over regular periods of time (daily, weekly and monthly). After configuring a recurring report job with the Recurring Report Job wizard, the job configuration appears in the details pane under Recurring Report Jobs, where its name, type, and the date that you created the report job are also displayed. (Note that the End Date is always displayed as "Ongoing", as recurring report jobs do not have an end date.)

To view a recurring report

To view a recurring report, see Viewing published reports.

Viewing published reports

Publishing reports allows you to share this data with others who do not have access to the Forefront TMG computer or the Forefront TMG Management console. In the case of one-time reports, publishing also allows you to save a snapshot of the data for the time period specified in the report. Note that recurring report jobs are always published; publishing one-time reports is optional.

Published reports are stored in a subfolder of the directory you specified, named <Report_Job_Name>_(Start date—End date). For example, if you publish a report job named DailyReports, scheduled to run from December 1, 2008 through December 15, 2008, the published reports folder will be named DailyReports_(12.1.2008—12.15.2008).

Important

Make sure that anyone who should have access to published reports has Read permissions to this folder.

To view a published report, do the following:

  1. From the Forefront TMG Management console, select a report and click View Published Reports…, either from the right-click context menu or from the Tasks pane. The directory you specified as the published reports directory will open in Windows Explorer.

    Note

To view a published report without using the Forefront TMG Management console, navigate to the shared published reports directory specified in the report job configuration.

  2. Open the directory that contains the desired report.

  3. Double-click on report.htm. The report will open in a browser window.

    Note

You must first generate a one-time report in order for its results to be published.
