Set aspect ratio options

Aspect ratio is the ratio of the width of a shape to its length. Aspect ratio can apply to both the dimensions of a video and the dimensions of the individual pixels in that video. You can adjust both image and pixel aspect ratio in Microsoft Expression Encoder.

For more information on aspect ratio, see Aspect ratio essentials.

To set aspect ratio options

  1. Click the Profile tab. If the Profile tab is not visible, then, in the Window menu, choose Profile to select it.

  2. Set your Aspect Ratio options in the Profile panel according to the below guidelines.

    • Video Aspect Ratio   This setting determines the overall aspect ratio of your encoded video. If you added multiple clips to your source video, then they all will conform to the aspect ratio set here. Choose Source to retain the aspect ratio of your source video. Choose 4:3 or 16:9 to conform your encoded video to the respective ratio. If you choose either 4:3 or 16:9, you can also adjust the pixel aspect ratio. Choose Custom to create an aspect ratio that is not 4:3 or 16:9.

    • Display/Pixel   Set the respective aspect ratios here, depending upon your Video Aspect Ratio choice. You should understand what these ratios mean, and whether they are appropriate for your audience before you set them. See Aspect ratio essentials for more information.

If you chose Custom, these options appear automatically. Click the lock icon to edit the value and click the corresponding box to type a value. You can only enter one set of values at a time. If you unlock one option, the other will lock. You can lock them both once you choose your values. If you chose Source, neither of these choices are available. If you chose 4:3, 16:9, you can only change the pixel aspect ratio.

    • Resize Mode   Set whether your resized video is either stretched to fill the new dimensions, or adds black bars to the width or height dimension to fill the space and retain the aspect ratio.
