Set Audio options

The Audio settings enable you to specify settings for the WMA and AAC audio codecs that you specified for your encoded audio. Microsoft Expression Encoder supports multichannel audio.

NOTE: The AAC codec is available only in Expression Encoder Pro.

To set audio options

  1. Click the Encode tab. If you can't see the Encode tab, on the Window menu, click Encode.

  2. Set your Audio options in the Encode tab according to the following guidelines:

    • Mode   Specifies whether to use constant-bit-rate (CBR) or variable-bit-rate (VBR) encoding. For more information about bit-rate encoding modes, see Understanding different types of bit-rate encoding.

    • HE-AAC This option only appears if you select HE-AAC as your audio codec. Choose the most appropriate HE-AAC version for your project. Both provide high quality compression at low bit rates, but Version 2 adds parametric stereo (PS) compression which more effectively compresses stereo signals.

    • Channels   Specifies the number and type of audio channels in your file. For WMA codecs, you can choose from stereo, and 5.1 and 7.1 surround-sound. HE-AAC Version 1 codecs add the choice of mono, 3, 4, and 5 channels, (7.1 is not supported, however). HE-AAC, Version 2 supports only stereo. AAC-LC supports all of the above channels, including 7.1.

    • Bitrate   Specifies, in Kbps, the bit rate for the file. Increase the bit rate if audio is an important part of the file (for example, if the audio is a recording of a concert). To save file size and bandwidth, you may want to decrease this value if your audio consists only of speech, such as a talk show podcast.

    • Sample Rate   Specifies the number of samples per second in the audio file. You will get the best results if you set the sample rate to match the rate of your original file.

    • Bits Per Sample   Specifies the bit depth used when sampling.
