What's New in Device Emulator
The following new or expanded features are available in Device Emulator.
Note
By default, Device Emulator version 3.0 overwrites previous installations and is installed in \Program Files\Microsoft Device Emulator\1.0.
New Features in Device Emulator 3.0
My Device Emulators and All Device Emulators in Device Emulator Manager
Device Emulator configuration files that are saved in "%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Device Emulators" ("%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Device Emulators" in Windows Vista) appear in the My Device Emulators node of the Device Emulator Manager. Device Emulator configuration files that are saved in "\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\All Device Emulators" ("\Users\Public\Documents \All Device Emulators" in Windows Vista) appear in the All Device Emulators node of the Device Emulator Manager. With this feature, you can save and customize a set of emulators outside the datastore. For more information, see Device Emulator Configuration Files and Device Emulator Manager.
Save as and Reconfigure
You can save and reconfigure device emulator settings to a device emulator configuration XML file. For more information, see Device Emulator Configuration Files.
Automation Interfaces
Automation interfaces are COM interfaces that expose functionality in the Device Emulator Manager. By consuming this interface in your applications, you can programmatically control the Device Emulator Manager. For more information, see Device Emulator Manager Automation Interfaces and Device Emulator Manager.
New Features in Device Emulator 2.0
Performance Boost
The device emulator's performance has been improved significantly. Execution time has been cut in half for many operations.
Emulation of Notification LED, Vibration, Backlight, and Screen Contrast
The device emulator now emulates notification LED, vibration, backlight, and screen contrast hardware. For example, the device emulator window will flash to simulate vibration and the screen will become dimmer or brighter when the contrast is adjusted.

Your operating system image must support the device emulator's hardware. Generally, Windows Mobile 6 and later images support these new features.
Speakerphone, Headset, and Car Kit Emulation
This feature simulates the presence of a physical speakerphone, headset, or car kit. For more information, see How to: Simulate the Presence of a Headset, Speakerphone, or Car Kit.
