Settings and Constraints Editor Terminology

In Application Designer, you can view and apply settings and constraints to application and endpoint definitions on the application diagram using the Settings and Constraints Editor. In Logical Datacenter Designer, you can view and apply settings and constraints to logical server, zone, and endpoint definitions on a logical datacenter diagram. You can view, but not edit, these settings and constraints while working in System Designer and Deployment Designer. For more information, see Settings and Constraints Editor.

The following illustration shows the Settings and Constraints Editor.

The following table introduces terminology associated with the Settings and Constraints Editor.

Term

Definition

Setting

Describes a configuration element that controls the behavior of applications or the run-time environment. You can also define custom settings.

Settings exist on applications, logical servers, zones, and endpoints and are used as a basis for validating constraints in Deployment Designer. Settings are saved to a configuration file or store, such as the Web.config configuration file of an ASP.NET application or the appropriate application definition (.sdm) file.

For more information, see Applying Settings.

Constraint

Describes a requirement to set a configuration value a certain way. Typically, you can constrain the following items:

  • The participation of an application, logical server, or endpoint in a hosting relationship.

  • The value of a setting.

Constraints between applications and logical servers are evaluated when you validate a deployment diagram.
