How to: Edit an Existing Test Setting for a Test Plan

You can edit existing test settings for a test plan if you want to select different diagnostic data adapters, or configure the selected adapters to collect different data. You can edit the test settings from the Properties page for your test plan in Microsoft Test Manager, or you can edit them from the Test Settings Manager in the Lab Center.

If you change the roles in your test setting, you might also need to create, edit, or select a different environment for your test plan. For more information about the environments that you can use, see Setting Up Test Machines to Run Tests or Collect Data.

The following procedures describe how to edit an existing test setting. To create a new test setting, see Setting Up Machines and Collecting Diagnostic Information Using Test Settings.

Updating an Existing Test Setting

To update an existing test setting from the Properties page for your test plan

  1. Open Microsoft Test Manager.

    Note

    To display the Microsoft Test Manager window, click Start, and then click All Programs. Point to Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and then click Microsoft Test Manager 2010.

  2. Click the down-arrow on the center group switcher and then click Testing Center.

  3. On the center group menu bar, click Plan and then click Properties.

    The properties for the selected test plan are displayed.

  4. In the Properties page, click Open next to either the Test settings drop-down list under Manual runs, or click Open next to the Test settings drop-down list under Automated runs.

    The Test Settings page is displayed with the General page selected.

    You can now update the setting by editing the options in the General, Roles, Data and Diagnostics pages and clicking Next and Previous to move between them. For more information, see Create Test Settings for Manual Tests or Create Test Settings for Automated Tests as Part of a Test Plan.

    Note

    If you change the roles in your test settings, you might also need to create, edit, or select a different environment for your test plan. The set of roles in your test settings must be included in your environment. You can select a different environment from the Properties page for your test plan. For more information about the environments that you can create, see Setting Up Test Machines to Run Tests or Collect Data.

  5. In the Summary page, verify that the test setting is updated correctly and then click Finish.

    Your updates to test settings are saved and will be used appropriately when you run your manual or automated tests from the test plan.

Editing an existing test settings

To update an existing test setting by editing it using Lab Center

  1. Open Microsoft Test Manager.

    Note

    To display the Microsoft Test Manager window, click Start, and then click All Programs. Point to Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and then click Microsoft Test Manager 2010.

  2. On the center group switcher, click the down-arrow and then click Lab Center.

  3. On the center group menu bar, click Test Settings.

  4. Under Test Settings Manager, click the test setting that you want to edit, and then click Open.

    The Test Settings page is displayed with the General page selected.

    Note

    You can also create a new test by clicking New. You can also create new test settings from the Testing Center, for more information, see Setting Up Machines and Collecting Diagnostic Information Using Test Settings.

  5. You can now update the setting by editing the options in the General, Roles, Data and Diagnostics pages and clicking Next and Previous to move between them. For more information, see Create Test Settings for Manual Tests or Create Test Settings for Automated Tests as Part of a Test Plan.
