This topic provides user-interface (UI) guidelines for designing a main menu that integrates with a Live Search application on a Windows Embedded NavReady powered device.

Guidelines

Shortcut Links to the Live Search Application

For ease of discoverability, the shortcut link to Live Search services should generally be accessible from the Main Menu of the portable navigation device (PND).

For ease of access, the Live Search application should have direct links to it from other locations in the UI. For example, you can add links to the Live Search application in the task bar. Live Search menus or buttons must be identified by one of the following UI elements:

  • Live Search branded logo
  • "Live Search" text

Main Menu of the Live Search Application

The main menu for the Live Search application should display the various services available from Live Search, in order of popularity or importance, as follows:

  1. Live Search Yellow Pages phone-book listings
  2. Live Search White Pages phone-book listings

Main Menu Functionality

The following scenarios are typically important to users and should be supported by the Live Search menu UI:

  • The user should be able to navigate to information about a single address or business listing by using the Live Search application.
  • The user should be able to view a collection of search results in the menu, choose one search result from the collection, and then navigate to information about it by using the Live Search application.

Message with Activation Instructions

When a user taps the Live Search button to send a query to the Live Search servers, the portable navigation device (PND) should first check whether the Live Search for Devices (LS4D) service has an active IP-based connection, and if not, the UI should display Internet-activation instructions to the user.

Note

In Windows Embedded NavReady, the user can establish an Internet connection by using either Bluetooth Dial-up Networking (DUN) profile, or by using ActiveSync Desktop Pass-through (DTPT).

Live Search Data Unavailable

If the Live Search application does not currently have data available for the user, the buttons that link to the Live Search application should be disabled as an indicator of the status. This situation might occur for several reasons, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • The user traveled to a new region outside a Live Search coverage area
  • The user does not have Internet connectivity
