Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry (Industry 8.1)

7/8/2014

Review the major sections of the Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry (Industry 8.1) technical documentation library.

Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry (Industry 8.1) combines the power, innovation and familiarity of Windows 8.1 with specific features for enabling commercial device applications. Industry 8.1 is an update to Industry 8 that incorporates new functionality available in Windows 8.1 in addition to updates to the lockdown and branding capabilities.

Industry 8.1 supports the image-based deployment technologies available in Windows 8.1. For IT professionals, this means you can use the flexible deployment and servicing solutions from Windows 8.1 with Industry 8.1, including secure remote management.

Industry 8.1 system requirements

Industry 8.1 has the same system requirements as Windows 8.1. You can view these requirements at Windows 8.1 system requirements.

Purpose

This documentation will help you learn about and use Industry 8.1. It is designed to be effective for multiple learning styles and varied levels of knowledge of both embedded systems and of previous versions of Windows Embedded.

Intended audience

This documentation is intended primarily for manufacturers, developers, and system administrators of Industry 8.1 systems. It is not intended as end-user documentation for the consumers of devices produced with Industry 8.1.

Organization

The major sections of this documentation are as follows:

  • Glossary
Describes the terms and definitions used in the documentation for Industry 8.1.
  • Customer Experience Improvement Program
Describes the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP), a voluntary program that collects information about how customers use Industry 8.1 and some of the problems they encounter. Microsoft uses this information to improve the products and features customers use most and to help resolve issues.
  • Migrate from Windows Embedded 8 Industry
Helps you determine changes that you may need to make to your image if you migrate from an earlier version of Windows Embedded 8 Industry (Industry 8) to Industry 8.1.
  • Product keys and activation
Explains Industry 8.1 product keys that are used to determine the grace period or evaluation period of an image, and used to generate a product identifier (PID) to identify each unique installation.
  • Activate a device
Describes the process of registering Industry 8.1 with Microsoft to assure the product is genuine.
  • Configure and deploy an image
Describes how to use Windows System Image Manager (Windows SIM) to add lockdown features to your image, suppress Windows brand elements, edit an answer file, and deploy your image to one or more devices.
  • Lockdown features
Describes the features that enable you to provide a controlled and specialized experience for the end user of a device by limiting the ways in which the user can interact with the device.
  • Microsoft Software License Terms
Provides the license agreement between you and Microsoft Corporation or, based on where you live, one of its affiliates that describes your rights to use Industry 8.1.
