Japanese IME 3.1 (Compact 2013)

3/28/2014

Windows Embedded Compact supports the Microsoft Input Method Editor (IME) 3.1 for Japanese. Using IME 3.1, users can type complex characters and symbols, such as Japanese Kanji characters, by using a standard keyboard.

Japanese IME 3.1 does not support an on-screen keyboard. However, you can support a hardware keyboard with Japanese IME 3.1 by using any Japanese input methods that are based on the Windows Embedded Compact software-based input panel (SIP) architecture and provided in Windows Embedded Compact. For more information about catalog items for input methods, see Japanese Catalog Items and Sysgen Variables.

Japanese IME 3.1 includes the following functionality.

  • Standard Database Dictionary   The dictionary consists of a lexical database that users use to look up Japanese words.
  • Customizable UI   You can create a customized version of the IME user interface (UI) and a theme for common controls. You can also customize the IME toolbar, the candidate window, and the default composition window.
To create a customized UI, you can modify the code that draws UI elements, which is different from the code that implements UI elements. Japanese IME 3.1 includes two predefined themes that resemble Windows XP and Windows 95 style themes.
  • Optional UI Components   In Japanese IME 3.1, property dialog boxes and dictionary tool dialog boxes are optional.
  • Landscape and Portrait Orientation   In Japanese IME 3.1, optional property dialog boxes and dictionary tool dialog boxes can use either landscape or portrait orientation. Landscape orientation targets a display screen that is 480 × 240 pixels or larger. Portrait orientation targets a display screen that is 240 × 320 pixels or larger.
In landscape view, dialog boxes have full functionality similar to Windows computers. In portrait view, dialog boxes provide functionality only for common scenarios, and the dialog boxes use fewer tabs and a smaller window. For more information about setting the orientation of the UI, see Shell Catalog Items and Sysgen Variables.
