Build Your First Standard 7 Image Using Image Builder Wizard (Standard 7 SP1)

In this procedure, you will learn about how to use Image Builder Wizard to build a minimal Windows Embedded Standard 7 image to introduce you to the basic concepts that you will encounter while you are using Standard 7.

Hardware and Software Assumptions
To run Image Builder Wizard, your target device should meet or exceed the Requirements for an Embedded Device.
Note
The Standard 7 setup process performs several verifications, which rely on the target device's date and time settings. For optimal performance, confirm that the target device is set to the correct date and time.
To build your first Windows Embedded Standard 7 image using Image Builder Wizard
On your reference device, insert the Standard 7 product DVD that corresponds to the architecture of the reference device and restart your device to run Image Builder Wizard.
On the Install Windows page, select Build an Image.
On the Microsoft Software License Terms page, select I accept the license terms, and click Next, and then do the following:
On the Image Creation Method page, select Create a custom image.
On the Language and Locale Settings page, do the following:
- Select Language to install on the target device.
- Select Time and currency format to use.
- Select Keyboard or input method.
- Click Next to continue.
On the Target Analysis page, select Automatically detect devices.
Image Builder Wizard runs Tap.exe to detect the installed devices. The resulting .pmq file is then mapped to the necessary driver packs to be installed on the system.
On the Drive Confirmation page, view the list of all devices discovered by Image Builder Wizard, and then click Next.
To add more device drivers to your image, select Add Drivers and move to the folder where additional drivers are located. If you add more drivers to your image, they will be displayed under the node External Drivers.
On the Feature Packages Selection page, select feature packages your target configuration by doing the following:
- Select one of the WinEmb-Shell feature packages from the list to add to your Standard 7 image.
- When you have finished selecting packages, click Resolve to resolve package dependencies.
When all dependencies conflicts are resolved, click Next.
On the Summary page, review the packages and drivers that will be installed, and then click Next.
On the Volume Management and Selection page, do the following:
Select the volume you want to install your Standard 7 image on.
Note
If the volume you want to install your Standard 7 image on is not listed or you have to prepare it, you can use the Load Driver or Drive options (advanced) to perform the steps that are required to make the drive ready for the installation.
Click Next to continue.
The Installing Windows page displays detailed information about the progress of your image installation.
Your device will restart several times during installation. When the installation has finished, the Installation Progress page closes.
Your device restarts using the new Standard 7 image that you created.
Next Steps
After your device restarts, it displays a series of Windows Welcome screens that you can use to help set up your device. You can do the following:
- Choose a user name and picture
- Type a computer name and decide a desktop background
- Help protect Windows automatically
- Review your time and date settings
- Select your computer's current location
When Windows Welcome is finished, choose Start on the final screen. You can now log on to your new Standard 7 image and try the features that you added in Image Builder Wizard.
