Create a Configuration Set from an Answer File (Standard 7 SP1)

7/8/2014

A configuration set is a folder that contains the packages, applications, images, and drivers used in an answer file. Image Builder uses the configuration set and its associated answer file to build or modify an installation of Windows Embedded Standard 7. In Image Configuration Editor, you can create a configuration set using an answer file and a distribution share.

Important

Because Image Configuration Editor builds each configuration set to meet the unique needs of each answer file, you must provide the configuration set and its matching answer file when using Image Builder.

Image Configuration Editor creates the following files and folders in a configuration set:

  • AutoUnattend.xml (a copy of the source answer file)
  • AutoUnattend_Files (packages used in the source answer file, separated into subdirectories by the configuration pass they apply to)

After you create the configuration set, you will not be able to modify it. If you save the associated answer file separately from the configuration set, you will be able to easily open it in Image Configuration Editor, make any changes you require and then create a new configuration set.

Hardware and Software Assumptions

  • You have installed Windows Embedded Standard 7 Toolkit on a development computer that meets the requirements for a development workstation. For more information, see Requirements for a Development Computer.
  • To create a configuration set on a remote device, your development computer must also have access to a network share or writable media.
  • You have created and validated an answer file using Image Configuration Editor, and you have it open. For more information, see Create an Answer File in Image Configuration Editor.

Create a configuration set

  1. On the Tools menu, choose Create a Configuration Set.

  2. Enter the location of the target directory for your configuration set, or create a new one. The location must be accessible from your target device, such as a USB flash device (UFD) or a network share.

    Important

If the Create a Configuration Set option is unavailable, or if you receive an error message when you choose Create a Configuration Set, you do not have a distribution share (DS) selected. To select a distribution share, click Select Distribution Share from the File menu.

Next Steps

After you have created your configuration set, the next step is to build your image using a configuration set and an answer file. For more information, see Install Using a Configuration Set and an Answer File.
